في هذا الكتاب محاولة في كشف بعض مظاهر اللبس في قضية تفرد (الضاد) بهوية العربية، منطلقاً من عِدّة تساؤلات منها :هل العربية هي لغة الضاد فعلاً؟ هل هذه السِّمة صحيحة؟ أم أن صوتًا آخرَ يُزاحِم الضاد على هذه المكانة التي تبوأها ردحًا طويلاً من الزمن.
وقد لاحظ المتقدِّمون أن الخصوصيَّةَ الصوتيَّة للغة العربيَّة لــ(الظاء) وليس لـ(الضاد)، والخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي من الأوائل الذين صرَّحوا بأن صوت (الظاء) مُختَصٌّ بالعربية مُقتصِرٌ عليها،وهذا يتوافق مع ما توصَّلَ إليه المُشتغِلون بعلم اللغات المقارن؛ فإنهم يكادون يُجمِعُون على أنَّ مقولة: "العربية لغة الضاد" ليست دقيقة، ومال بعضُهم إلى تأكيد وُجودِ صوت الضاد أو أَثَرٍ منه في اللُّغات الجزرية(السامية) الأُخر،ويُمكن القولُ: إنَّ نعتَ اللغة العربية بأنها لغة الظاء أَولى من نعتِها بكونها لغةَ الضاد، وسلطت الدراسة الضوء على الأسباب الرئيسة التي رسّخت وصف العربية بأنّها لغة (الضاد):كالحس القومي، وصعوبة النُطق، وكثرة الوافدين إلى الإسلام من الأمم الأخر، والمستشرقين.
