إن اللسانيات الأدبية تبحث في بنية اللغة وتوزع وظائفها في الأنواع الأدبية ثم تبحث في التقنيات الأسلوبية والسيميولوجية التي يمكن للأدباء أن يستعملونها من أجل التأثير الأدبي، واللسانيات والنقد الأدبي يجتمعان من حيث الأداة والغاية، فهما تحليل وتفكيك للغة، فالأول هدفه معرفة بنية النظام الذي من خلاله يمكن لهذه الأداة اللغوية أن تعمل على نحو صحيح وسليم، والنقد الأدبي يقيم إتصالاً جمالياً متخذاً من اللغة أداة ومنطلقاً في الوقت نفسه.
لقد أقامت اللسانيات جوهر تعريفها للظاهرة اللغوية على مفهوم العلامة من حيث هي (دليل) لا يدل في بدئه بمقومات رمزية، وإنما يكتسب دلالته بإتفاق عارض يضفي عليه قيمة الرمز دون أن يحوله إلى رمز، واللسانيات قد أبرزت تعريف اللغة بوظيفتها التي هي الإبلاغ، ثم لما عملت على تفسير تحقق هذه الوظيفة انكبت على فحص المقومات التكوينية فأردفت إلى التعريف الوظيفي تعريف اللغة بنيوياً فاكتملت حلقة الدائرة منطقياً من حيث أسس الحد.
