يجمع هذا الكتاب تقريرات لما أفاد به الأستاذ العلامة السيد "إسماعيل الصدر" في دروسه الفقهية التي ألقاها في النجف الأشرف على جملة من العلماء والفضلاء، وقد تصدى لتحريرها وضبطها السيد "محمد الصدر" وسماها بـ "اللمعة في حكم صلاة الجمعة" بإعتبار أن السيد إسماعيل الصدر إقتصر في الكلام على حكمها من حيث الحرمة أو الوجوب التعييني أو التخييري.
يبدأ الكتاب بنبذة مختصرة عن حياة السيد "إسماعيل الصدر" وموجز عن حياة السيد "محمد الصدر"، يلي ذلك من الكتاب وفيه: حكم صلاة الجمعة حال الغيبة على أقوال بعض علماء الإسلام. وعلى هذا يقع الكلام عنها في مبحثين: أولهما: في وجوب صلاة الجمعة أيام السلطان العادل، وثانيهما: في وجوبها في غير أيامه، مع شرح للأدلة الأربعة في وجوبها من الكتاب والسنة والإجماع والعقل، وأخبار صريحة في بيان مشروعية إقامة صلاة الجمعة.
في ختام الرسالة إستنتج السيد محمد الصدر على أنه "... لم يقيم عندنا دليل على أن وجوب الجمعة في حال وجود السلطان العادل هل هو تعييني أو تخييري؟ ولكن حيث ثبت عندنا عدم الوجوب التعييني في غير أيام السلطان العادل، ولم يثبت عندنا تقييد الأدلة، فنستكشف أن الجمعة من أصل تشريعها كانت على نحو الوجوب التخييري. على أن إنقلاب الجمعة من التعيين إلى التخيير ليس بمستحيل، إذ من الممكن أن تكون مطلوبيتها مطلقة، ولكن تعيينها منوط بوجود السلطان العادل..."
