تصور هذه الرواية محنة صحافي عراقي، لم يكن قد اندرج في جوهر الحكم ولا في نهجه السياسي يعمل في صحيفة رسمية، ليكون شاهدا على مرحلة هي الأعنف في حياة العراق المعاصر، مرحلة صعود القيادة الحالية الى الحكم وبدء حروبها الداخلية والخارجية. والشاهد هنا لم يتردد من ان يطابق ملامح شخصيات عمله الأدبي، مع ملامح شخصيات في الحكم العراقي عمل معها وخبرها عن قرب.
"حافات الأمل" تأتي في قسمين، الأول " في ليلة " وفيه مسارات انحطاط بشري ومصائر سود، والثاني " في نهار" حيث يتوصل القاسمي الى فكرة لطالما كان يجدها مثار تندر واستهجان، ان يخرج من بلاده حفاظا على حياته ومن اجل ان تستمر الفكرة التي مثلها، وان يكون الشاهد على خراب مستديم .ونجح النصراوي ببراعة في تتبع مسار فكرة الخروج، فجعل القاسمي الذي عادة ما يسميه اصدقاؤه بالضمير، وبالنقي يشتبك وبوضوح هذه المرة مع نقيضه السلطوي المخادع، المديني. هنا ينهي القاسمي قبل ان يعبر حدود الوطن، حدودا غير مرئية للمواجهة، ليكشف عن نمط من انماط "المقاومة بالحيلة" تلك التي برع فيها عراقيون، وعبرها دافعوا عن مساحات لم تتلوث في حياتهم" كنت انجح في استفزازك، لأني كنت اكتشف ان كل السلطة التي في يديك لا تستطيع ان تقتل التحدي الذي في داخلي حتى لوعبرّت عنه بنظرة مستخفة كنت تستطيع ان تكشفها في عيني او حتى بمجرد الصمت الذي كنت اشعر انه يغيظك اكثر من الكلام. بل سأصارحك اكثر، ما دمت سألتني، كنت انت لعبتي المفضلة التي اجدت ممارستها في قهر الخوف الأكبر، وتحديك كان سلاحي الذي انتصرت به دائما على محاولات سحقي، وظل يمنحني الصبر والأرادة ويعطيني القوة ويشحن في الأمل والرجاء".
