في الخامس عشر من آذار/مارس 2011 أخبرتُ وكالة أنباء الأسوشيتدبرِس الأمريكية التي عملت فيها خلال الأعوام الخمسة والعشرين الأخيرة مراسلًا صحفيا بالعراق بعزمي على الاستقالة منها معللا تلك الاستقالة كتابةً برفضي واحتجاجي على أمور كثيرة، منها الطريقة التي أدارت بها الوكالة تغطية ما أصبح يُدعى منذ ذلك الوقت بالربيع العربي. كانت الثورات في تونس ومصر وليبيا واليمن والبحرين وسوريا قد فعلت فعلها بي، إذ إنها من ناحية أطلقتني شخصيًا من أسر تلك القيود التي كبلت انسجامي الداخلي طويلا، ومن ناحية ثانية أشعرتني بالمسؤولية الأخلاقية تجاه الثورات وتبنيها والدفاع عنها من دون قيود مهنية أو سياسية. ولم يكن قراري ذلك احتجاجا على الطريقة التي أدارت بها الوكالة تغطية الثورات والتي سعت من خلالها إلى إبعادي عن المشاركة الفاعلة فحسب، بل أيضًا ضد السياسة الأمريكية التي بدت لي من اللحظة الأولى أنها سائرة في درب حرف الثورات عن مسارها الحقيقي لأسباب تتعلق بمصالحها وسياساتها التقليدية في المنطقة والتي رأيت أنها سوف تتسلل إلى تغطية الوكالة الصحفية لهذه الثورات من دون أن أكون قادرًا على مواجهتها خلال عملي هناك، كما فعلت من قبل في العراق.
وفي كتابي هذا (حياة من ورق) شهادة شخصية على زمن عشته، زمن شهد أحداث أكثر من نصف قرن شكلت وسوف تستكمل في القريب العاجل تشكيل صورة المستقبل الآتي لبلدي العراق وللمنطقة العربية بأسرها، في رحلة رأيت خلالها وطني يُحتل ويُهان ويُدمر ثم يتلاشى كدخان حرائق ويسرق ثرواته اللصوص والفاسدون..
