ليس هذا كتابًا فى تاريخ الحملة الفرنسية على مصر (1798ــ 1801) ولكنه محاولة لمناقشة قضية فكرية فى تاريخ مصر الحديث تتعلق بإشكالية النهضة والحداثة التى اطلعت عليها مصر خلال سنوات الاحتلال الفرنسى وإلى أى مدى تأثرت بذلك، فينطلق من السؤال: هل يمكن أن تأتى النهضة والحداثة فى ركاب الغزاة؟ كيف ذلك وإلى أى مدى..؟ وهذه الإشكالية تستمد مشروعيتها من ظهور رؤيتين مختلفتين تجاهها لدى المؤرخين والمفكرين فى الشرق والغرب. أولاهما: ترى أن نهضة مصر وتحديثها بدأت مع «الغزو» الفرنسى وبسببه، وأن تاريخ مصر «الحديث» بدأ بالفعل منذ وطئت أقدام جيش الشرق بقيادة بونابرت أرض مصر فى أواخر القرن الثامن عشر، حيث بدأت مصر تطَّلع وتنفتح على معطيات الحضارة الحديثة وتتعلم منها أسباب نهضتها، بل وتطورها السياسى والاجتماعى بشكل عام، فيرى المؤرخون الغربيون، ومن والاهم من المصريين، أن الغزو الفرنسى لمصر كان هو الأساس لنهضة مصر الحديثة. وثانيتهما: ترى من وجهة نظر قومية أو متحفظة، أن الاحتلال الفرنسى لمصر كان مرحلة قاتمة ومظلمة فى تاريخها، بل وفى تاريخ الشرق العربى كله، حيث أسهم فى تفتيت وحدته وفصم عرى الروابط والعلاقات التاريخية الوثيقة بين أجزائه، وأنه جلب إليه المطامع الاستعمارية، فضلاً عما جلبه من عادات وتقاليد غربية أثرت سلبًا على طبيعة شعوبه وهددت هويتها وتراثها الأصيل. وبالرغم من تدهور أوضاع مصر خلال العقود الأخيرة من القرن الثامن عشر، فإنها كانت تحمل فى أحشائها مقومات نمو داخلى وصحوة كادت أن «تنهض» بها نحو الحداثة لولا الغزو الاستعمارى الفرنسى، الذى أعاق نهضتها الذاتية ووجهها وجهة غربية. وتتبلور الإشكالية التى يعالجها هذا الكتاب من واقع أسئلة عديدة تصب فى فكرته الأساسية، ومن هذه الأسئلة: متى دخلت مصر عصرها الحديث؟ وما هو مفهوم الحداثة التى أصابتها، وهل ما أدركته منها يجعلنا نقرر أنها انتقلت من عصر تاريخى إلى آخر، وهل قدر عليها أن تنتقل إلى هذا العصر بإرادة الفاتحين والغزاة؟ وما هو موقف أهلها من ذلك، وهل كان بوسعهم أن يختاروا بين بونابرت وبين فولتير، بين المدفع والمطبعة؟ باختصار، هل كانت الحملة الفرنسية حملة استعمارية أم حملة تحديث وتنوير لمصر؟
