تحتل الفترة التى يمثلها عصر سلاطين المماليك (648-922هـ/ 1250-1517م) مساحة مهمة فى تاريخ «الرحلة» الإنسانية عامة، والرحلة الأوروربية إلى المنطقة العربية على نحو خاص. فقد شهدت هذه الفترة عدة تطورات تاريخية مهمة بدأت بوقف الخطر المغولى فى معركة عين جالوت (26 رمضان 658هـ / سبتمبر 1260م)، وانتهت بسقوط دولة سلاطين المماليك بعد معركة مرج دابق ومعركة الريدانية (922هـ / 1517م) ، وكانت النتائج المباشرة لنجاحات دولة سلاطين المماليك ، أن صارت القاهرة العاصمة السياسية والاقتصادية والثقافية للعالم المسلم من ناحية ، كما كانت مقصدًا للزوار والتجار والسفراء والحجاج، والجواسيس والمغامرين والعلماء من ناحية أخرى . وعندما احتل العثمانيون مصر ، وتحولت من دولة إقليمية كبرى إلى ولاية من ولايات الدولة العثمانية، لم تفقد مكانتها لدى الرحالة من شتى الأنواع.
