هذا الكتاب عنوانه الأصلي "كم ميلاً إلي بابليون", وهو الاسم الذى عرفه الأوربيون في العصور الوسطي لمدينة القاهرة نتيحة لأسطورة قديمة.
ويتناول الكتاب رحلات التجار والحجاج والمغامرين والسفراء الأوروبيين إلي مصر البلاد المجاورة لها, وقد أوردت المؤلفة وصفاً للمدن المصرية والريف والصصحراء في اقتباسات مصورة من كتب الرحالة الذين عرضت لهم؛ مما رسم صورة حية بألونها للقاهرة تحت حكم سلاطين المماليك, ثم حكم الولاة الأتراك العثمانيين بعد سنة 1517م, وغلي جانب ما عرض له الكتاب من ملامح العادات والتقاليد في مصر آنذاك, كانت هناك معلومات عن النباتات والحيوانات المصرية والأحوال الاقتصادية والتجارية, ويشمل الكتاب أيضاً رحلة إلي الحجاز, واخري إلي بلاد الحبشة, كما يقدم- بشكل عام- صورة حيوية لمصر وعالم العصور الوسطي من القرن الرابع عشر إلي أواسط القرن السابع عشر.
