من موقعه الأكاديمي وثقافته الشمولية واطلاعه على طيف واسع من الوثائق والمصادر، يرى جمال واكيم في الحرب اللبنانية ما لم يره الاخرون، لأنه دخل إليها من منظور أعمق كثيراً، ولم يؤخذ كسواه بشكليات الأمور وحيثياتها، حتّى عندما سخّر جرأته في تصوير قذارة الحرب ودمويتها ووحشية أربابها العائدين إلى مختلف الأطراف بلا استثناء، والذين استبقوا داعش في رمي الأحياء عن سطوح الأبنية، وفي الذبح والتنكيل بالجثث وبقر بطون الحوامل، وشطر الأطفال أمام عيون ذويهم. ففي حين أن سواه رأى حرباً محض طائفية، رأى جمال فيها صراعاً طبقيًّا، وهيمنة واضحة للإقطاع السياسي، ومحاولة دامية منه لتثبيت موقعه والحفاظ على مصالحه، بل توسيعها على حساب العامة الذين لا يشكّلون في نظره سوى أتباع لا قيمة لهم.
رجع في تاريخ لبنان إلى الوراء كثيراً وقليلاً، وبيّن الأسباب المنطقية والظروف المفضية إلى إشعال الحرب، مستنداً إلى رؤية فلاديمير لينين وتجربته في الثورة، وإلى نظريات نعوم تشومسكي، ومنظّرين سواهما. -توسّع أفقيًّا مبيّناً تأثير الجوار القريب والبعيد للبنان في مجريات الحداث ومآل الأمور.
تفرّد بتحليله العميق للبنية الطائفية في لبنان، وكيف رسمت كل طائفة حدودها غير المعلنة ، ضمن لبنان الواحد الموحّد ظاهريًّا، واستنباط سيكولوجية الفرد ضمن الطائفة، ومدى تأثيرها، وسيكولوجيته بعيداً عنها وعن هيمنتها.
تحدّث بجرأة منقطعة النظير عن الإرهاب الذي مارسته كل طائفة على أبنائها وأبناء طوائف سواها، وعن تحالفاتها الداخلية والخارجية المشبوهة غالباً.
كتاب وصف لبنان ووصّفه إبّان الحرب الأهلية، وما أفرزته، ليؤسِّس، متى شاء اللبنانيون، لمشروع لبنان حقيقي، شعباً وكياناً، مستفيدين من كل عثرات الماضي، ومآسيه الباهظة.
