هذا كتاب مختصر لكتاب "الجليس الصالح الكافي والأنيس الناصح الشافي" تأليف القاضي أبي الفرج المعافى بن زكريا الجريري النهرواني (303-390هـ)، صاحب الفنون المتعددة، الذي كان يحس بملل بين الفينة والأخرى، مثلما يحصل مع أي شخص منا، وعلى كل إنسان في كل دهر وأوان، ويتسلى عن مصائب الدنيا، ويعتبر بحال من مضى، ويتعلم الصواب من أقوال الحكماء، وأخطاء المتسرعين، فيحتاج إلى أن ينوع يومه بين شرح حديث وفهم معانيه والعمل به، وبين سير الصالحين والعلماء وطرائف الناس ومصائبهم، وأخبار العشاق، ونوادر المغنين، وخفايا الخلفاء، وعدل القضاة، وجور الحكام، وإحسان المحسنين، وغير ذلك من أنواع القصص القرآني، والنبوي، وقصص بني إسرائيل وغيرهم من الأمم، والعرب قديماً وأحوال العالم على مر العصور، يتفيأ في ظلالها المعانين ويسترشد في هداها فهم الأخلاق، ويحيا حياة من سبق، ويعيش لحظات في حياتهم، بأروع وأحزن ما فيها، وأترف وأضنك ما فيها.
أحس القاضي بما يحس به الإنسان من حاجة للمعرفة عن طبائع من سبق، فكتب هذه القصص التي ليست من (وحي) خياله، ولا من بنات أفكاره، بل هي مما نقل إليه بالإسناد، أو مما رآه وشاهده وسمعه حوله، وفيها العبرة للمعتبر.
وضمنها فوائد متنوعة، لغوية وحديثية، وقرآنية، وقراءات، وتاريخ، ومواعظ وحكم. وعقب عليها بما يستفيد القارئ، ولا يمل، بل يزداد لهفاً لقراءتها.
ينقلك من مجالات الشعراء ومقارضاتهم ومناقضاتهم إلى حوار أهل اللغة، إلى مجالس القضاء، ويحولك إلى بني إسرائيل، ثم يعيدك إلى عصرك، وينقلك مرة أخرى إلى العرب في الجاهلية. ولا يجعل هذا إلا وهو معلم لحكم الشرعي، ومفقه لمسألة في الأدب، وعقيدة هي الأساس وتاريخ تقتبس منه أعظم الأحاسيس لرفعة الذات. ولا يخش من حوله، فينقد من كان على الخطأ أو يصوب حسبما يراه باجتهاده مما وفقه الله إليه.
وبين يدينا كما أسلفنا القول مختصر لكتاب أبي الفرج النهرواني حيث تم انتقاء أسهل الروايات، وأغزرها معنىً، وأوضحها عبارة، وأقلها تكراراً، وهذا وقد تم حذف المناقشات، والمجادلات العقيمة.
