المعافي هو مصنف هذا الكتاب "الجليس الصالح الكافي والأنيس الناصح الشافي" وهو أحد علماء القرن الرابع الهجري، وقد عاش معظم هذا القرن، متلقياً العلم من أكابر علماء عصره، متقناً فنوناً كثيرة، وألف فيها، من ذلك التفسير والقراءات والحديث والفقه والفرائض والنحو والصرف والبلاغة وغيرها، لكنه لم يشتهر بين معاصريه إلا بأنه الجريري، وذلك نسبة إلى "أبى جعفر بن جرير الطبري" صاحب اجتهادات فقهية خاصة نصب المعافي نفسه للدفاع عنها، وربما كان لشهرته بأنه كبير المذهب الجريري في عصره قد غطى على جوانبه العلمية الأخرى، مما أدى إلى اندثار كتبه... فلم يبق منها إلا كتابه هذا الموسوم بالجليس الصالح الكافي والأنيس الناصح الشافي، الذي ضمنه نصوصاً وأحاديث نبوية، وأخباراً وقصص الخلفاء والولاة، والقضاة، وشعراً وأقوال أدباء، وفوائد كثيرة من مختلف أنواع العلوم من تفسير وقراءات ونحو وصرف وعروض وبلاغة وغيرها.
تنقسم هذه الدراسة إلى قسمين. الأول يتضمن دراسة عن المعاني بن زكريا النهرواني، وعن أدب السمر حتى عصره، الثاني تحقيق كتابه، ومنهجه في تأليف الكتاب. وقد تجلى عمل المحقق تخريج الآيات القرآنية الكريمة والأحاديث النبوية الشريفة، والتعريف بالإعلام الواردة في الأخبار، ووضع عناوين لها ثم التعليق عليها بما فيه زيادة إيضاح أو إكمال نقص أو تصحيح وهم، كما قام، بتخريج المسائل النحوية واللغوية والصرفية والبلاغية وغيرها من مظانها بما فيه زيادة إفادة للقارئ وتشويق له وحث على القراءة.
