تواجه منطقة الشرق الأوسط العديد من التحديات في ظل المتغيرات الدولية، ولعل من أهم هذه التحديات "حرب المياه" وقد ظهر العديد من الدراسات والتحليلات التي تحذر من أن دول الشرق الأوسط تعاني شحاً في كميات المياه لأسباب متعددة، ومن هذه الدول مصر والأردن والعراق وسوريا وإسرائيل والضفة الغربية، وأن الشرق الأوسط نتيجة لذلك على حافة الهاوية، حيث تشير الدراسات إلى أن تركيا أخذت تقوم ومنذ سنوات عدة ببناء سلسلة من السدود العملاقة على نهر الفرات والتي يمكن أن تحتجز آخر الأمر نصف حجم المياه المتدفقة إلى سوريا والعراق.
كما أن نهر النيل يلقي ظلالاً عميقة التأثير على العلاقات بين مصر والسودان وأثيوبيا. وهو يعني أن الحرب القادمة لن يثيرها النفط بل المياه، ولا سيما أن عدد السكان في تزايد مستمر. ومما يزيد الأمر تعقيداً أن نصف المياه العذبة هو في الدول المتقدمة، وأن العالم العربي يقع في منطقة مدارية جافة، وأن نسبته 90% من مياهه ينبع ويمر بدول أخرى، ويقع معظم سكانه تحت خطر الفقر المائي، حيث نصيب الفرد أقل من 1000 متر مكعب سنوياً، فضلاً عن التهديدات الإسرائيلية، حيث أن مصادر المياه لا تكفي سكان إسرائيل عام 2015 إلا بنسـبة 15% من حاجتهم مما يزيد من احتمالات التوسع الصهيوني على حساب حقوق المياه العربية. وفي هذه الدراسة استعراض لأسباب أزمة المياه في الشرق الأوسط والتهديدات المحتملة للأمن المائي العربي، كما تشمل العديد من التوصيات والمقترحات.
