كثيرة هي الدراسات التي تناولت مشكلات المياه في الشرق الأوسط، ولكن القليل منها تناولت مشكلات المياه بشمولية وعمق، ومن اللافت للنظر أن هذه المشاكل في تزايد وتعقيد لأسباب طبيعية وبشرية، فكميات المياه في تراجع كبير نتيجة للتغيرات المناخية وموجات الجفاف وإرتفاع درجات الحرارة عن معدلاتها، انعكس على تزايد المجموع السنوي للتبخر، الذي أدى إلى تزايد المتطلبات المائية للكائنات الحية فضلاً عن فقدان كميات كبيرة من المياه عن طريق التبخر والتبخر النتح.
كما أن التزايد والنمو السريع للسكان في معظم مناطق الشرق الأوسط الذي يعد الأعلى في العالم، مما أدى إلى تضاعف حجم السكان في كثير من دوله إلى أكثر من ثلاثة أضعاف خلال العقود الخمسة الاخيرة.
هذه الزيادة الهائلة للسكان رافقها زيادة في المتطلبات الغذائية والمائية وإحتياجات حياتية متنوعة في المجالات الصناعية والزراعية والمدنية والبيئية، كما أن للمشكلات السياسية والجيوبوليتيكية التي تعصف بالإستقرار والعلاقات الدولية في الشرق الأوسط تأثيراً كبيراً على تفاقم مشكلات المياه، فقد وظفت المياه سياسياً وبخاصة ضد الدول العربية التي تقع معظم منابع مياهها الرئيسة خارج حدود الوطن العربي.
إن الباحث تناول هذه المشاكل وركز على أكثرها خطورة وأشدها صعوبة وهي مسألة التغيرات المناخية التي أدت إلى تزايد مشكلات الجفاف وشحة الأمطار وندرة المياه، فقد تناولها بشكل علمي ودقيق معززاً دراسته بالبيانات والمعلومات الدقيقة عن المحطات المناخية في بعض دول الشرق الأوسط، مركزاً على التغيرات المناخية في حوضي دجلة والفرات، مستخدماً المعادلات المناخية وبعض الوسائل الكمية لتحديد سنوات الجفاف وتكرارها وتحديد التناقص في كمية الأمطار في المحطات المناخية.
