قلّما سمع القرّاء المثقفون في عالمنا العربي بكتاب يوهان شيلتبرغر، على الرّغم من أهميته الكبيرة، وصلته المباشرة بتاريخ مشرقنا العربي وعالمنا الإسلام، وشمول رحلاته التي دعت بعض الباحثين إلى تلقيبه بــ "ماركو بولو الألماني".
ترك لنا هذا المؤلّف كتاب مذكّرات شخصيّة، يروي قصّة قضائه في أسر العثمانيين ومن بعدهم المغول لفترة نافت على 32 سنة، طاف فيها بلداناً عديدة في اوروبا وآسيا وأفريقيا (وبينها مصر والشّام والعراق وجزيرة العرب) بين 1394 - 1427م في فترة عصبية عصفت بمشرقنا العربي خلالها جائحة المغول في مطلع القرن الخامس عشر للميلدا، فدمّرت ما دمّرت، ونجم عنها تغيّرات سياسيّة جسيمة، فأخّرت فتح القسطنطينيّة نصف قرن، وعاصرت بواكير دولة الممالك البًرجيّة في مصر.
في أعقاب معركة نيكوبوليس الفاصلة، عانى شيلتبرغر ربقة الأسر والعبودية طويلاً، غير أنّ ذلك لم يمنعه من أن يترك لنا نصّاً مرجعيّاً ثميناً، لا غِنى عنه لمن يبحث في تاريخ تلك الفترة ورسوم دولها وأحداثها قادتها ومملوكها.
وهو إن كانت تغلب عليه العامّيّة والبساطة، فهذا لا ينفي كونه شاهدَ عيان يمتاز بالعفويّة والصّدق، فصوّر ما رأى وسمع وشهد، أو ما بلغه بالمشافهة، تصويراً حيّاً شائقاً وممتعاً، يكمّل ما بين أيدينا من نصوص لمؤرخين مُسلمين تناولوا أحداث الفترة المذكورة، مثل: نظام الدّين شامي، ابن تَغري بَردي الأتابكي، ابن قاضي شُهبة، ابن عَرَبْشاه، ابن خلدون، ابن الصَّيرفي، الذين استفاضوا برواية أخبار الغازي المغولي تيمورلنك.
