قلما سمع القراء المثقفون في عالمنا العربي بكتاب يوهان شيلتبرڠر، على الرغم من أهميته الكبيرة، وصلته المباشرة بتاريخ مشرقنا العربي وعالمنا الإسلامي، وشمول رحلاته التي دعت بعض الباحثين إلى تلقيبه بـماركو پولو الألماني. ترك لنا هذا المؤلف كتاب مذكرات شخصية، يروي قصة قضائه في أسر العثمانيين ومن بعدهم المغول لفترة قاربت 32 سنة، طاف فيها بلدانا عديدة في أوروپا وآسيا وأفريقيا وبينها مصر والشام والعراق وجزيرة العرب بين 1394-1427م في فترة عصيبة عصفت بمشرقنا العربي خلالها جائحة المغول في مطلع القرن الخامس عشر للميلاد، فدمرت ما دمرت، ونجم عنها تغيرات سياسية جسيمة، فأخرت فتح القسطنطينية نصف قرن، وعاصرت بواكير دولة الممالك البرجية في مصر. وفي أعقاب معركة نيكوپوليس الفاصلة، عانى شيلتبرڠر ربقة الأسر والعبودية طويلا، غير أن ذلك لم يمنعه من أن يترك لنا نصا مرجعيا ثمينا، لا غنى عنه لمن يبحث في تاريخ تلك الفترة ورسوم دولها وأحداث قادتها وملوكها. وهو إن كانت تغلب عليه العامية والبساطة، فهذا لا ينفي كونه شاهد عيان يمتاز بالعفوية والصدق، فصور ما رأى وسمع وشهد، أو ما بلغه بالمشافهة، تصويرا حيا شائقا وممتعا، يكمل ما بين أيدينا من نصوص لمؤرخين مسلمين تناولوا أحداث الفترة المذكورة، مثل ابن خلدون وابن الصيرفي.
