This book, compiled by tall buildings specialist, Georges Binder, is a guide to the most significant tall buildings from more than 40 cities in 23 countries in Europe, the East and Africa.
Focusing on buildings completed since the 1990s, the book also features major yet-to-be-completed projects. A selection of buildings from earlier in the 20th century provides a perspective to the history of tall buildings in these regions. A comprehensive introduction further examines the history of tall buildings in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the role of hotels in the growth of tall buildings, and the influence of special high-rise zones, such as the La Defense area in Paris.
While high-rise buildings are a common sight in major European cities such as Frankfurt, Brussels, London and Paris, there are some surprising entries from cities not usually associated with very tall buildings, including Casablanca, Bratislava, Cairo and Istanbul, proving that architects know few geographical boundaries when it comes to building taller.
The recent and growing dominance of the Middle East, particularly Dubai, and the high-rise renaissance in Moscow are also demonstrated by a number of startling examples, including the proposed world’s tallest building, due for completion in Dubai in 2009.
