يُعرف علم الرجال بأنه (علم وضع لتشخيص رواة الحديث ذاتاً ووصفاً ومدحاً وقدحاً) وقد كان السيد بحر العلوم موسوعياً في منهجه الرجالي فلم يسلك منهجاً واحداً وإنما سلك عدة مناهج للوصول إلى حال المفردة الرجالية وصحتها، فقد كان يستعرض الرجال من خلال تسليط الاضوء على الراوي من جهة التربية السرية ومعرة فالجهة التي نشأ فيها والبيئة التي ترعرع فيها، والمؤثرات على سلوكه.
في هذا الكتاب تتبع الدكتورة سعاد حبار محمد الوائلي خصائص علم الرجال ومبانيه العامة لمعرفة أحوال الرواة من خلال البحث والدراسة في أبرز المناهج الرجالية التي تميز بها القدماء والمتأخرون، في محاولة لإيضاح منهج السيد محمد مهدي بحر العلوم في كتابه (الفوائد الرجالية)، فجاءت حصيلة البحث في بيان معالم المنهج الرجالي لدى السيد بحر العلوم والوقوف على آليات التوثيق لديه.
توزعت الدراسة على تمهيد: في تعريف علم الرجال وبيان أهميته والحاجة إليه، يتبع ذلك أربعة فصول، تناول الفصل الأول عصر السيد بحر العلوم وسيرته الذاتية، فيما تناول الفصل الثاني موارد السيد بحر العلوم العلمية ككتب رجال الحديث القدماء والمتأخرون والمعاصرون له، كما شملت موارده كتب الحديث والتاريخ والفقه واللغة والأصول والتفسير والعقائد. أما الفصل الثالث والذي كان مدار عنوان الكتاب الرئيسي فقد سلّط الضوء على منهج السيد بحر العلوم في كتابه (الفوائد الرجالية). فكانت خمس مناهج أولها منهج البيوتات الرجالي والثاني منه الطبقات وكان منهج الفوائد الثالث ثم المنهج التحليلي والروائي. ويأتي الفصل الرابع والأخير في آليات التوثيق الخاصة والعامة لدى السيد بحر العلوم. وكان نص المعصوم عليه السلام ونص المتقدمين ونص المتأخرين وأصحاب الإجماع من الخاصة، ومن "الآليات العامة" تمت الإضاءة على صاحب كتاب أو أصل كتاب: شيخوخة الإجازة وتوثيقات رجال الإرشاد وغيرها. وأخيراً خاتمة ونتائج الدراسة.
