الجواهري حقل بكر لم يتطرقه الكتاب إلا تحت ستار المناسبة وفي أضيق حدودها، ما يبعث على تسجيل انطباع عابر: قدحاً أو مدحاً.. وظل بعيداً عن متناول يد النقد التي أمتدت إلى شعراء من الدرجة الثانية وما ينزل عنها حتى ليكاد المرء أن يتساءل عن سر هذا الصمت الذي يجابه به جهاز النقد العربي شاعراً هو من علو الصوت بما لا يترك عذراً لسامع؟ ولست في صدد البحث عن جواب يكشف أبعاد هذا الموقف وملابساته حسبنا أن نعلم أن جهاز النقد العربي لا يمكن أن ينجو مما يصيب أجهزة الحياة في مجتمعنا من خذلان في الوعي أو انحراف عن ممارسة شريفة لواجب موضوعي تتثاقل عنه الصدور التي اتخمها التبرير وكانت إلى الممالاة والارتزاق أقرب منها إلى أي شيء آخر.
وقد تكون هذه أول محاولة لدراسة نقدية جادة لهذا الشاعر. وكنت مدركاً منذ البدء أن دراسة الجواهري مهمة ثقيلة بسبب ما تتطلبه من مراجعة طويلة على أكثر من صعيد: سياسي واقتصادي واجتماعي، وفني وتراثي ولغوي.
وقمت لهذا الغرض بعرض الفكرة، مع فهرس مقترح، على عدد من لأساتذة المعنيين بالدراسات اللغوية والأدبية، وكانت حصيلة جهود الأساتذة ممن أسعفته ظروفه وقدراته فاستجاب للفكرة هذا الكتاب، الذي آمل أن يضيف رصيداً طيباً إلى ميزان النقد، في وقت سيساهم فيه بتقديم الجواهري إلى القارئ العربي على الوجه الذي صاغته الضرورة التاريخية: شاعراً كبيراً يتمركز في قمة الشعر الكلاسيكي المعاصر، ومناضلاً جهوراً ضد كل ما يشوه وجه الحياة العربية من تفسخ وجوع واضطهاد.. مع كل المثقفين الأخيار المقاتلين تحت راية العدل والحضارة.
