يعلل بورخيس صدوده عن كتابة الرواية بالكسل، غير أن مجموعاته القصصية التسع تضجُّ بإمكانات متنوعة لكتابتها، فحين يتحول العالم نفسه إلى مكتبة، ويتناسل الكتاب إلى عدد لا يُحصى من الكتب، يتحدث كل كتاب فيها عن كتب سابقة ولاحقة عليه، تصبح الحياة نفسها سرداً لا ينقطع، وينقسم زمان العالم إلى أزمنة لانهائية تتقاطع وتتداخل وتتشعب، فالحياة - عند بورخيس - "قَصَص"، بمعنى خيال سردي يتملص من حدود الزمن الضيقة، ويحن إلى أن يصير خيالاً يحتال به لإصطياد الأبدية الهاربة دائماً، وقد أدرك عاشق المتاهات منذ بواكير بداياته أن مادة هذا العالم المصنوع من الكتب تكمن في الأحلام، وقال عام 1931: "كتب شوبنهاور" ( أن الحلم واليقظة يشكلان صفحات كتاب واحد، وأن قراءتها من أجل الحياة، وتقليبها كيفما اتفق يعني أن نحلم، وتساعدنا الرسوم داخل الرسوم، والكتب التي تتفرع إلى كتب أخرى على الإحساس بهذه الواحدية).
يضم كتاب "قَصص" مجموعتين من قِصص بورخيس: "حديقة المسالك المتشعبة"، التي يتيه فيها القارئ في متاهات الأبنية الزمنية المتقاطعة، ومجموعة "احتيالات"، التي يحتال فيها المؤلف لإخراج القارئ بوعده بصروح زمنية سردية من نوع آخر.
