يضم هذا المجلد ما كتبه خورخي لويس بورخس من شعر ونثر في الفترة من 1976 إلى 1969، ويعد إصداره إحتفالاً ببلوغ كاتبه السبعين من العمر، وقد لقي ترحاباً من القراء والنقاد، وهو يمثل بورخس في أوج نضجه ويعود فيه كاتبه إلى موضوعاته الجوهرية، فإذا كان "الحيوان قد مات أو شبه مات" في هذه السن، كما يقول الكاتب، فإن الروح يبقى وتبقى الجذور. وبين هذين الطرفين يوجد الظل، "الظل الذي يشبه الخلود".
في مقدمة الديوان يشير الكاتب إلى العديد من هواجسه المطروحة في نظمه ونثره، إضافة إلى غرضي الشيخوخة والأخلاق البارزين على هذه الصفحات، ولعل أحدهما أو كليهما يستوقفنا هنيهة، يقول بورخس "إن الإنسان هو الكائن الوحيد الذي يلتفت إلى هرمه وعجزه"، ومادة "مديح الظل" هي الزمن الذي يبلي الجسد ويبلي الإنسان.
