حدث ذلك في صباح الخامس من آب عندَ السَّادسة. كنتُ قد أفقتُ قبل وقتٍ قصيرٍ وصعدتُ دونما تأخيرٍ إلى القارب؛ بضعُ ضرباتٍ من المجذاف دفعَتْني بعيداً عن حصى الشَّاطئ وتوقَّفتُ أسفلَ صخرةٍ عظيمةٍ لأحتمي بها من الشَّمسِ التي كانت تبزغُ آنذاك، مُنتفخةً بأُوارِ غضبها الجميل، وتحوِّلُ إلى ذهبٍ وزُرقةٍ نصاعةَ البحرِ الفجريِّ. كنتُ أُنشِدُ الشِّعرَ عندما شعرتُ بهبوطٍ مُفاجئٍ لحافَّةِ القارب، ورائي، من جهة اليمين، كما لو أنَّ أحدهم تعلَّقَ هناك ليصعدَ. التفتُّ ورأيتُها: رأيتُ الوجهَ النَّاعمَ لفتاةٍ في السَّادسة عشرة من عمرها يخرجُ من البحر، ويدَين صغيرتين تمسكان بلوحٍ من ألواح القارب. كانت تلك الفتاة تبتسم؛ ثنيةٌ خفيفةٌ كانت تُباعِدُ بين الشَّفتين الشَّاحبتين كاشفةً عن أسنانٍ صغيرةٍ بيضاءَ وحادَّةٍ، كأسنان الكلاب. ولكنَّها لم تكن ابتسامةً كتلك الابتسامات التي يراها بعضُكم على وجهِ بعضٍ، تلك الفاقدةِ أصالتها تحت تعبيرٍ عرَضيٍّ عن المحبَّةِ أو السُّخريةِ أو الشَّفقةِ أو الوحشيَّةِ أو أيِّ شيءٍ آخر؛ ابتسامتُها كانت تعبِّرُ عن ذاتها فحسب، كانت أشبه بانتشاءٍ حيوانيٍّ بالوجود، أو قُلْ أشبه بغبطةٍ إلهيَّة. كانت هذه الابتسامة أوَّلَ سحرٍ يفعلُ فِعلَه بي كاشفاً لي عن فراديسِ صفاءاتٍ منسيَّة. مِن الشَّعرِ المبعثَرِ الذي بلون الشَّمس كان ماءُ البحر يهمي على العينين الخضراوين المفتوحتين، وعلى كلِّ ملامحِ النَّقاء الطُّفوليِّ.
