كتاب التحقيق الجنائي يعنى بالجانب العملي و الفني و التطبيقي لقانون أصول المحاكمات الجزائية، إذ يتعرض لـ(التحقيق الجنائي قديما و حديثا) فيذكر تحت هذا العنوان الرئيسي تعريف التحقيق الجنائي و أنواعه، و نشأته و تطوره، عند العرب و المسلمين، و مكافحة الشريعة الإسلامية للجريمة، وكذلك تطوره في البلاد العربية، ثم يبين الكتاب علاقة التحقيق الجنائي بالقوانين الأخرى و أقسامه. وبهدف الإلمام بجوانب الموضوع عرف الكتاب(المحقق) وذكر صفاته و علاقاته، و الأخطاء التي يجب أن يتجنبها، و معلوماته و أعوانه و أدواته.
ثم يفصل الكتاب في موضوع (التحقيق) فيذكر الغرض من التحقيق و مكانه و مراحله، و تعريف البلاغ و المحضر، و التقارير و ضمانات التحقيق الجنائي في الشريعة الإسلامية، و ضمانات التحقيق الابتدائي في القوانين الوضعية، و تدوين التحقيق، و علانيته.
ثم يتطرق الكتاب لموضوع (الأدلة الجزائية) فيذكر أنواع الأدلة و طرق جمعها، و الانتقال و المعاينة، و التفتيش و الضبط، و سماع الشهود، و الاستعانة بالخبراء و غير ذلك.
ثم ينتهي الكتاب بالحديث عن موضوع (التصرف في التحقيق) فيذكر تحت هذا العنوان: الإحالة إلى المحكمة، حفظ التحقيق، العدول عن قرار الحفظ، و التصرف بالمضبوطات.
