وبالتالي، فإن التحقيق تبعاً لذلك كان بدوره بسيطاً بدائياً أما في الوقت الحاضر فقد بدء المجرمون يستعينون بمختلف الطرق العلمية والفنية لإرتكاب جرائمهم وتنفيذ ماربهم لذلك فإن الخبرة والممارسة في التحقيق لم تعد كافية لوحدها لإكتشاف الجرائم مما دعا المحققين إلى إستخدام الوسائل العلمية كذلك لمسايرة هذا التطور كما إن إجراءات التحقيق الإجرامي بدورها لم تصل إلى ما هي عليه إلا بعد أن مرت بمراحل متعددة فقد كان دليل الإثبات ضد المتهم ينحصر في إعترافه بإرتكاب الجريمة.
