هيأ الله تعالى لسنة نبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم حملة عدولاً، وعلماء كباراً، بذلوا نفوسهم، وأضنوا أجسادهم، وأفنوا أعمارهم، في سبيل تصفيتها وتحريرها وتنقية الدخيل منها. ولقد تنوعت جهود أهل الحديث على مرّ الأعصار، فمنهم من جمع الكتب الكبيرة التي تبلغ المجلدات الكثيرة، كلها في جمع الأحاديث النبوية على أبواب الفقه أو مسانيد. ومنهم من جمع أحاديث باب علمي واحد في مصنف منفرد يجمع فيه شتات ما تفرق.
ومنهم من يجمع في كتاب واحد سائر ما وصل إليه علمه حول حديث نبوي واحد بعينه، من طريق وشواهد ومتابعات وغير ذلك. وهذا هو الذي قام به مصنف كتابنا هذا الذي نقدمه محققاً، فقد جمع ما يقرب عن مئة وثمانين طريقاً لحديث "من كذب علي متعمداً" ناقلاً هذه الطرق عن ستين صحابياً من أصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. والإمام "الطبري" عالم معروف عند أهل العلم وطلبته، بالإيعاب في التصنيف، والسعة في الرواية.
ولأهمية الكتاب ولمكانة مصنفه جاء الكتاب كما قلنا محققاً أما عمل المحقق فقد تجلى بـ أولاً: ترقيم أسماء الرواة، وكذا ترقيم أطراف الأحاديث والروايات، ثانياً: ضبط الكتاب ضبطاً تاماً، وكذا ما ورد فيه من أسماء وأنساب وكنى وألقاب وغير ذلك. ثالثاً: تخريج أحاديث الكتاب تخريجاً علمياً، حرص فيه على أن يعطي كل سند درجته صحةً وضعفاً.
