يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى دراسة الخصائص النفسية للطفل وإبراز الأسس والمبادئ العلمية التي يخضع لها كل تغير يطرأ على سلوكه بمختلف مظاهره منذ الولادة، بل منذ لحظة الإخصاب إلى نهاية مرحلة الطفولة وبداية البلوغ؛ إنه ينظر إلى الطفل ككيان قائم بذاته له خصوصيته ويرفض النظرة إليه كمشروع راشد، بل هو يتعاطى مع مرحلة الطفولة كعوالم نفسية متباينة، لكل منها ميزاته وفرادته.
إنه يدرس المسار العام للنمو النفسي للطفل دون إغفال الفروق الفردية بين الأطفال وإيلائها الإهتمام اللازم بإعتبارها خلاصة تأثير عاملي الوراثة والبيئة معاً.
إن معرفة دقيقة للطفل تسمح للأهل والمربين على حد سواء فهم سلوكه والتنبؤ بتصرفاته واستباق الخلل قبل إستفحاله وتأزمه من خلال التدخل المبكر، كما يسمح لهم بالتحكم بسلوك الطفل من خلال الحد من الآثار السلبية للعامل الوراثي، وأيضاً بإمكانية توجيهه من خلال التحفيز البيئي المناسب، بإعتماد أطر تربوية سليمة وواضحة في التعاطي معه.
ولا بدَّ من الإشارة إلى أن دراسة مسار النمو النفسي عند الطفل يأخذ منحًى أكثر شمولية، إذ لا تقتصر فائدته على معرفة الطفل لذاته، بل هو يشكل حجر الأساس لمعرفة الراشد إنطلاقاً من مفهوم التحليل النفسي "الطفل أب الراشد".
