حظى التمثيل الخرائطي بدور مهم في الدراسات الخرائطية ولا سيما عندما دخل إستخدام الحاسوب الىلي إلى علم الخرائط بغية الوصول إلى الدقة في النتائج التي يحصل عليها الباحثون.
وتعد الخرائط الموضوعية إحدى الأساليب العلمية المُطبقَّة لعرض أو رؤية ما على سطح الأرض من ظواهر طبيعية أو بشرية بأسلوب نوعي وآخر كمي على خرائط صغيرة أو متوسطة المقياس، حيث تبدو الخارطة مرآة تعكس أثر العوامل الجغرافية المختلفة ومدى تفاعلها وترابطها بشكل يندر أن تبررهُ وسيلة أخرى، فضلاً عن إستخدام هذه الخرائط لتمثيل الظواهر الجغرافية وتصميم الرموز وتجسيد المتغيِّرات البصرية بأنواعها المختلفة.
وتسهم عملية التمثيل الخرائطي بإستخدام المتغيِّرات البصرية إسهاماً بارزاً في الدراسات الجغرافية على نحو عام، والخرائطية على نحو خاص، حيث أنها تؤدي دوراً فعالاً في التعبير عن المعطيات الجغرافية ونقلها إلى ذهن المتلقي، ومن ثمّة بناء صورة جديدة سريعة الإدراك ومستذكرة ومفيدة وفقاً لأسس القواعد البصرية.
ويعدُّ متغيِّر الحبَّة أحد أنواع المتغيِّرات البصرية البارزة في التعبير عن الإختلاف وتنظيم الظاهرة الجغرافية على نحو ترتيبي يأخذ بالإعتبار تدرج الظاهرة الجغرافية من رتبة مكانية إلى أخرى، ومن ثمّة إدراك طبيعة توزيع الظاهرة والعلاقات المكانية فيما بينها.
في حين تدور مشكلة البحث في هذا الكتاب حول إنحسار إستخدام متغيِّر الحبَّة من الخرائطيين والعاملين في نظم المعلومات الجغرافية عند عملية تمثيل الخرائط لقلّة توفر الرموز الجاهزة لمتغيِّر الحبَّة، فضلاً عن قلة الإلمام بالقواعد الخرائطية الخاصة بمتغيِّر الحبَّة، مما دفع الباحث إلى دراسة هذا المتغيِّر وبيان طرق تصميمه وتوضيح المفاهيم الخرائطية اللازمة لإستخدامه.
