يُعد مفهوم التعميم الخرائطي الآلي من الدراسات المهمة في مجال الخرائط بل هو جوهر العمل الكارتوغرافي في إعداد الخرائط، وقد واكب التطور في الخرائط الآلية ونظم المعلومات الجغرافية معالجة التعميم الخرائطي، كما أن الحاجة إلى خرائط معممة لا تزال قائمة، فعليه يتطلب من الخرائطي تقويم البرمجيات (Algorithms) الخاصة بالتعميم الذي أصبح ضرورة في عصرنا الحالي والتعميم الخرائطي من المجالات التطبيقية للخرائط الآلية، التي تعتمد على التكامل بين نظم المعلومات الجغرافية وعلم الخرائط في استخلاص المادة الجغرافية التي من شانها أن تسهم في تفسير وتحليل وتعليل مظاهر سطح الأرض المختلفة. واكتسبت الدراسات الجغرافية التطبيقية أهمية كبيرة، وخصوصا منذ أن أسهمت تقنية نظم المعلومات الجغرافية في تذليل العقبات البحثية فيما يتعلق بمعالجة المعلومات المكانية المتنوعة وتحليلها.ولم يقتصر دور الخرائطي على تصميم وتمثيل ورسم الخرائط فحسب، بل ليشمل طرق الاستفادة من هذه التقنيات في استخلاص المعلومات الجغرافية والتي في منهجيتها تمثل مجالا تطبيقيا جيدا يسمى بالخرائط الآلية.(Computer Cartography). فأصبحت مهمة الخرائطي تصميم وتمثيل الموضوعات الجغرافية بإحدى طرق التمثيل على الخرائط وبما أن الظواهر الجغرافية تحمل عند تمثيلها على الخرائط خاصية الارتباط المكاني مع الظواهر الأخرى المشتركة معها بالمكان، فأن وضوح تمثيل مكوناتها يعد ضرورة جغرافية بعد أن يتم اختيار الأسلوب الأمثل لتمثيل هذه الظواهر على الخريطة.
