يأتي هذا الكتاب (علم الخرائط... دراسات ورؤية فكرية جديدة) إنطلاقاً من مبدأ الأصالة والتحديث في منهجية علم الخرائط، ويهدف إلى تيسير مادة أكاديمية متقدمة بين أيدي المعنيين والمساهمة في ميادين نقل التقنيات الحديثة، وتطوير البحث العلمي الجغرافي باللغة العربية، وإضافة جديدة للمكتبة العربية.
وقد احتوى الكتاب على ثمانية فصول، حيث خصص الفصل الأول: الترميز الخرائطي، وعالج الفصل الثاني: التعميم الخرائطي، وشمل الفصل الثالث: الإدراك الخرائطي، واحتوى الفصل الرابع: الإتصال الخرائطي، وتناول الفصل الخامس: مساقط الخرائط، وبحث الفصل السادس: الخرائط الإحصائية، وأفرد الفصل السابع: المعالجة البيانية، وتكلم الفصل الثامن: عن خرائط الحاسب ونظم المعلومات الجغرافية.
وقد راعى المؤلفان أن يكون عرض المعلومات مبسطاً ومدعماً بأمثلة توضيحية من خلال الأشكال المختلفة، وكذلك الوصول إلى أحدث المراجع والمصادر للوقوف على الإتجاهات المعاصرة في هذا المجال.
