ظلت الخرائط مادة دراسية في أقسام الجغرافيا بالجامعات حتى أنشئت شعبة للخرائط في بعض أقسام الجغرافيا. وكان من الطبيعي ان تتطور دراسة الخرائط لتصبح علما قائما بذاته. ولما كان من الطبيعي ان تنمو دراسة علم الخرائط فقد دعت الحاجة إلى تطعيم المكتبة العربية بكتاب في علم الخرائط فكان هذا الكتاب الرائد في المكتبة العربية. ولما كانت المساحة هي المرحلة الأولى لإنشاء الخريطة وكان مجال دراستها في كليات الهندسة أصبح من اللازم أن يضم علم الخرائط الخلفية المناسبة لدراسة المساحة. وكلما نما علم الخرائط فإن الحاجة تدعو إلى تطعيم المكتبة العربية بمزيد من المؤلفات في علم الخرائط حتى يصبح علما قائما بذاته.
