هذا نص مهم من نصوص التصوف الإسلامي، لعدة أسباب؛ أهمها سببان: مباشر يرتبط بأنه سيرة للشيخ عبد السلام الأسمر أحد أعلام التصوف في الغرب الإسلامي، وليبيا تحديدًا، في القرن العاشر الهجري، والآخر غير مباشر- ولعله الأهم- ويتمثل في أنه يجاوز كونه سيرة لعالم، إلى كونه سيرة لمرحلة تاريخية ومنطقة جغرافية، بكل ما كان يمر فيها من أحداث ورجال وأوضاع فكرية وعلمية واجتماعية واقتصادية، وبصفة عامة حضارية.. لهذا اختار المعهد هذا النص، ليكون نشره جزءًا من المشاركة في الاحتفاء بطرابلس (الغرب) عاصمة للثقافة الإسلامية عام 2007.
