قلما يظفر مؤرخو وجغرافيو الدول الاسلامية بصور عن النظم السياسية والاجتماعية والاخلاق العامة والحياة الخاصة اقوى واوضح من تلك التى دونت عن مجتمعات مصر الاسلامية ويرجع الفضل في ذلك إلى اربعة من اعلامها المؤرخين انجبتهم تباعا في القرنين الثامن والتاسع هم : المقريزي وابن تغرى بردى والسخاوي وابن اياس وقد عاش الأربعة في عصور متعاقبة واجتمع الثلاثة الأوائل في عصور متعاقبة واجتمع الثلاثة الأوائل في عصر واحد في اواسط القرن التاسع وعنوا جميعا بتدوبن تاريخ مصر الاجتماعي والالمام باحوال شعبها وظواهره النفسية والاخلاقية وحياته العامة الظاهرة والمستترة ولكن صاحب هذه الفكرة السعيدة والمبدع في عرضها هو اولهم وشيخهم تقي الدين المقريزي بل هو اول من ألهم هذه الفكرة من مؤرخي الإسلام جميعا وليس فيما اخرجته الآداب التاريخة والجغرافية عن مصر أثر في طرافته ونفاسته كالأثر الذي خلفه المقريزي عن حياة المجتمع المصري في عهود الدولة الاسلامية المتعاقبة فهو المرجع الفريد في نواح من تاريخنا وجغرافيتنا لولاه لحجتها ظلمات الماضي إلى الأبد وهو أنفس الحلقات التى تصل فيما بين الأطوار المختلفة للتقاليد والعادات التى تقلب فيه آباؤنا عدة قرون.
