والحاكم أبوعبد الله النيسابوري من حفاظ الحديث الذين خصصوا مساحة للتفسير في مصنفاتهم المعنية بالرواية، وذلك في كتابه الكبير: "المستدرك على الصحيحين" ، وقد كان له منهج واضح القسمات إلى حد كبير، سار عليه في هذا الكتاب الذي اقتربت رواياته من تسعة آلاف رواية، المكرر منها ليس بالكثير،غير أن مما يؤسف له أن هذا الكتاب، ولاسباب متعددة متباينة، لم يحظ بدراسة تليق به بحيث تفصل بين الصحيح وغيره؛ وبالتالي فإن كتاب التفسير الذي هو قطعة من "المستدرك" لم يحظ بالدراسة ذاتها، وعلى نفس السبيل ولنفس الأسباب لم يحظ منهج الحاكم في "المستدرك" بدراسة متأنية تستقرئ أحكامه فيه.
من كل ماسبق تتضح أهمية موضوع هذا الكتاب الذي أقدم له، وسبب اختياري إياه، وقد انقسم الكتاب إلى: الباب الأول: الحاكم وكتابه "المستدرك" واشتمل عل فصلين: الفصل الاول "الحاكم النيسابوري" ، الفصل الثاني "كتاب المستدرك على الصحيحين" ، الباب الثاني: اشتمل على اربعة فصول: الفصل الاول "كتاب التفسير" ، الفصل الثاني "موارد الحاكم في كتاب التفسير" ، الفصل الثالث "شيوخ الحاكم في كتاب التفسير" ، الفصل الرابع "الاصول التي بنى عليها الحاكم المستدرك"
