الإمام مسلم تلميذ البخاري وخريجه، تأثر به وبمنهجه، فلما جرّد البخاري الأحاديث الصحاح، وصنف كتابه العظيم (الصحيح) جرى مسلم على أثره وقد قال مسلم: "صنفت هذا المسند الصحيح من ثلاثمائة ألف حديث مسموعة". والكتاب لا يشتمل بعد مقدمته إلا على الحديث الصحيح المسند إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم على أبواب مفصلة الطرق والأسانيد ولا يوجد فيه غير المرفوع كالموقوف والمقطوع الصرف، إنما فيه موقوفات مما له حكم الرفع أو أشياء تذكر نادراً لا يقصد عدها من أصول الأحاديث في الكتاب.
وقد رتب مسلم (صحيحه) أحسن ترتيب، فهو يجمع ما يتعلق بالباب في موضع واحد بأسانيده التي يرتضيها، وقد تميز صحيح (مسلم) بكونه أسهل تناولاً من حيث أنه جعل لكل حديث موضعاً واحداً يليق به، يورد فيه بجميع ما يريد ذكره من أسانيده وألفاظه المختلفة، فيسهل على الناظر النظر في وجوهه واستثمارها. وقد تمّ إخراج الكتاب بحلة معاصرة تبويباً وتخريجاً وتوضيحاً وشرحاً وطباعة.
