تدخل هذه الدراسة المعنية بقياس سلم السادية والمازوشية ضمن تخصص علم النفس المرضى, ولقد بين الباحثون أن السادية والمازوشية تظهران مؤقتاً عند الإنسان فى بعض الظروف الإنفعالية فيقال عنها أنهما "حالة", وقد تلازم بعض الشخصيات المرضية كالشواذ والسيكوباتيين والذهانيين, فيقال عنهما "سمة", وتتبنى هذه الدراسة وجهة نظر تكاملية اى أن السادية ومازوشية قد تكون "كحالة" أو "سمة".
وتحاول هذه الدراسة تصميم سلم السادية ومازوشية معتمدة على الخطوات العلمية والمنهجية لبناء أدوات القياس فى علم النفس, ولبلوغ هذه الغاية قسم الباحث الدراسة إلى قسمين نظرى وتطبيقى و وزع الجانب النظرى على سبعة فصول:
الفصل الأول: مشكلة البحث ومنطلقاته.
