ساشا ناخت، مؤسس معهد التحليل النفسي في باريس، ونائب رئيس الجمعية الدولية للتحليل النفسي، يحاول في هذا الكتاب أن يقدم إحاطة شاملة، وصفاً وتأريخاً وتحليلاً وعلاجاً، بواحدة من أكثر تظاهرات الحياة النفسية المرضية انتشاراً ومن أكثر أمراض الحياة الجنسية خطورة. وهو يرى في المازوخية لا انحرفاً جنسياً فحسب، بل كذلك عصاباً. ويقسمها إلى ثلاثة أنواع: المازوخية الشهوية، والمازوخية المعنوية، والمازوخية الأنثوية. وإن تكن ظاهرة المازوخية الشهوية معروفة من أيام سقراط وأرسطو-وكلاهما كان من ضحاياها-فإن المازوخية المعنوية بالمقابل تحظى باهتمام ساشا ناخت الأول من حيث أنها في أغلب تظاهراتها، لا شعورية. وفي الفصل المهم الذي يكرسه للمازوخية الأنثوية يطعن في صحة الفرض الشائع القائل إن المرأة مازوخية بطبعها.
