يحظى الصراع العربي -الإسرائيلي بأهمية بالغة في السياسة الخارجية للجمهورية الإسلامية الإيرانية، وتدخل إيران فى هذا الصراع من خلال دعمها للمنظمات التابعة لها- مثل حماس وحزب الله- ويضفى بعداً جديداً لهذا الصراع لم يكن موجوداً فى السابق، ويزيد من حجم التهديد الذى تواجهه إسرائيل، وقد اختلف موقف الجمهورية الإسلامية الإيرانية مع موقف الشاه من هذا الصراع، حيث أقام شاه إيان علاقات دبلوماسية، وتجارية، واقتصادية وأمنية سرية، وعلنية مع إسرائيل، باعتبار إسرائيل الحليف الصديق، والوفى لإيران، إلا أن الأمور قد تبدلت وتغيرت كثيرا بقيام الثورة الإيرانية في 1979م، فقد أصبحت السياسة الخارجية للجمهورية الإيرانية منذ ذلك الحين، ترفض فى مجملها الوجود الإسرائيلي تماماً، فإسرائيل -كما يراها آية الله الخومينى مؤسس الجمهورية الإسلامية الإيرانية- "غدة سرطان فاسد لا بد من استئصالها".
