تنوّعت الكتابةُ والتصنيفُ في مادة التاريخ الإسلامي، فجماعة من المؤرِّخين يلتزم بالطابع العام للتاريخ، من حيث ترتيب الحوادث على السنين، وذكر التراجم الواردة فيهـا، ومثال هـذا كثيـر، بدايـةً من إمام المؤرخين الطبري ـ رحمه الله تعالى ـ، في كتاب ’تاريخ الرسل والملوك‘، وكتاب ’الكامل في التاريخ‘ للإمام ابن الأثير ـ رحمه الله تعالى ـ، وكتاب ’البداية والنهاية‘ للحافظ ابن كثير ـ رحمه الله تعالى ـ. ومالَ نفـرٌ آخـر من مـؤرخي الإسـلام إلى تدوين مدينـةٍ بعينهـا، كالخطيب البغدادي ـ رحمه الله تعالى ـ في كتاب ’تاريخ بغداد‘، وكتاب ’تاريخ دمشق‘ للحافظ ابن عساكر ـ رحمه الله تعالى ـ وكتاب ’القند في ذكر علماء سمرقند‘ للنسفي ـ رحمه الله تعالى ـ، وهذا فنٌ مشتهر معروف في كل الأقطار والأمصار، عبر كل العصور الإسلامية إلى يومنا هذا. أو ربما تخصص بعض المؤرخين بالاهتمام بطائفة معينة من أفراد المجتمع، فصنفـوا لها تواريخ خاصة بها، مثل كتاب ’عيون الأنباء في طبقات الأطباء‘ لابن أبي أصيبعـة ـ رحمه الله تعالى ـ، وكتاب ’معرفة القراء الكبار‘ للذهبي ـ رحمه الله تعالى ـ، وكتاب ’عَرف البـِشام فيمن ولي فتوى دمشق الشام‘ للمرادي ـ رحمه الله تعالى ـ. أما مصنف هذا الكتاب، الإمام مرعي بن يوسف الحنبلي ـ رحمه الله تعالى ـ، فقد تشكلت مادته التاريخية في عدة صور، فقد ألف في السيرة النبوية كتابه: ’تلخيص أوصاف المصطفى ومن بعده من الخلفا‘. وظهرت له عـدة عناوين في مجـال التراجم المفـردة، مثل كتابـه ’الشهادة الزكية في ثناء الأئمة على ابن تيمية‘، وكتاب ’الكواكب الدرية في مناقب المجتهـد ابن تيمية‘، وكتاب ’تنوير بصائر المقلدين في مناقب الأئمة المجتهدين‘. ثم نراه يمزج بين محصله العلمي العقدي، ونفسه التراثي كمؤرخ، فيصنف كتبـاً مثل ’مرآة الفكر في المهدي المنتظر‘، وكتاب ’الروض النضر في الكلام على الخضر‘. وصنف كتاباً خاصاً في سلاطين عصره، سماه، ’قلائد العقيان في فضائل آل عثمان‘ وكتاباً ذكر فيه تاريخ أهل مصره، وهو الكتاب الذي بيـن أيدينـا المسمى ’نزهـة النـاظـرين في من ولي مصـر من الخلفـاء والسلاطين‘، وهو صورة واضحة لانتشار مؤلفات هذا العالم الجليل، فقد وقفت على (24) نسخة من هذا العنوان فقط، مما يدل على قبول هذه المصنفات في الأوساط العلمية، من عصر المصنف ـ رحمه الله تعالى ـ، وفي القرون التي تلتـه، وذلك واضح من مواضع وجـود هـذه النسخ، وتواريخ نسخها.
