بين العروض وعلم العروض والصرف وعلم الصرف، من الفرق مثل الذى بين الموسيقا والنحو وعلم النحو؛ فالأول من هذه الأزواج، هو الكائن الطبيعى، والآخر هو كاشفه وضابطه وقانونه؛ فما علم العروض إلا جملة القواعد التى تحكم بناء البيت المفرد من الشعر، وما علم الصرف إلا جملة القواعد التى تحكم بناء الكلمة المفردة من اللغة.
وقد أعتمد فى هذا البحث -والله المستعان!- على مراجع من علم العروض، وعلم الصرف، وعلم الموسيقا، قديمة وحديثة، وأستأنس بمراجع من علوم أخرى مختلفة، قديمة أيضاً وحديثة، غير أن أهم ما أعتمد عليه وأستأنس به، عشق ودربة مستمران لعلوم العربية وآدابها، أحسن الله إلى من أنبت فى قلبى زهرتهما!
وأنتهج منهج تتبع علمى العروض والصرف، تقعيداً وتطبيقاً، لأجمع الأفكار المتوحدة فيهما المترددة بينهما، فأعرضها وأنقدها، استيضاحاً لحقيقة دلالة هذا التوافق. ثم أرتب إيراد هذه الأفكار ترتيباً منطقياً وأجعل مصطلح الفكرة عنواناً، وسواء أكان متداولاً أم وضعته لما لم أجد مثله، ولا أخلى هذا ولا ذلك من إيضاح.
