متخصص فى الأمثال يقول: (كتاب "مجمع الأمثال" كتاب جليل خطير، استحوذ منذ تأليفه على إعجاب الناس، وما زال يستحوذ على هذا الإعجاب حتى اليوم، لاستيعابه للأمثال العربية القديمة، وتدوينه لطائفة كبيرة من الأمثال المولدة لم يدونها كتاب غيره.
لقد أخبر الميدانى نفسه عما أخد به نفسه فى تأليف كتابه، ثم قال: (حتى لقد تصفحت أكثر من خمسين كتابا، ونخلت ما فبها فصلا فصلا وبابا بابا، مفتشاً عن ضوالها زوايا البقاع، مشذباً عنها أبنها بصارمى القطاع).
وقد قال الدكتور عبد المجيد قطامش: (يشتمل الكتاب على نحو ستة آلاف وثمانين مثلا، منها خمسة آلاف وثمانون مثلا عربيا، وألف مثل من أمثال المولدين وبذلك يكون أوسع كتب الأمثال قاطبة).
وقد ضم (مجمع الأمثال) -ومثله غيره- أقوالا كثيرة تتفق بحيث يمكن الكلام عنها على أنها نوع واحد من أقوال العرب، وتختلف بحيث يمكن الكلام عنها على أنها أكثر من ذلك. وقد عرف ذلك بعض الباحثين، فجعله أول الصعوبات التى تعترض طريق دراسة الأمثال، قائلا: (أول تلك الصعوبات يمكن فى تحديد المثل وتعريفه اصطلاحا ليسهل على الباحث معرفته،ويليه التمييز بين الثل والحكمة والقول المأثور أو السائر).
وكذلك قال الحسن اليوسى من قبل: (الحق أن من الأمثال ما لا يشتبه بالحكمة فى ورد ولا صدر، نحو: "الصيف ضيعت اللبن"، ومن الحكم ما لا يشتبه بالمثل ككثير من الحكم الإنشائية، ويبقى وراء ذلك وسط يتجاول فيه الفريقان كالمثل السابقة؛ فات كثيرا منها قد يعد مثلا تارة، وحكمة تارة، ولا فرق فيما يظهر إلا بالحيثية)
