قال الشيخ أبو حاتم سهل (بن محمد) بن عثمان السجستاني … ذكر أبو عبيدة، وأبو اليقظان، ومحمد بن سلام الجُمَحي وغيرهم: أن أطول بني آدم عمرًا الخضر عليه السلام، واسمه خضرون بن قابيل بن آدم عليه السلام. وقال ابن إسحاق: حدَّثنا أصحابنا أن آدم عليه السلام لمَّا حضرته الوفاة جمع بنيه وقال لهم: يا بَني إن اللَّه مُنزِلٌ على أهل الأرض عذابًا، فليكن جسدي معكم بالمغارة، حتى إذا هبطتم فابعثوا بي وادفنوني بأرض الشام. فكان جسده معهم، فلما بعث اللَّه تعالى نوحًا عليه السلام ضم ذلك الجسد، وأرسل اللَّه تعالى الطوفان على الأرض، فغرقت الأرض زمانًا، فجاء نوح عليه السلام حتى نزل ببابل، وأوصى بنيه الثلاثة، وهم: سام ويافث وحام أن يذهبوا بجسده إلى المكان الذي أمرهم أن يدفنوه فيه، فقالوا: الأرض وحشة ولا أنيس بها ولا نهتدي الطريق، ولكن نكف حتى يأمن الناس ويكثروا، وتأنس البلاد وتجف. وقال لهم نوح عليه السلام: إن آدم قد دعا اللَّه أن يُطيل عمر الذي يدفنه إلى يوم القيامة. فلم يزل جسد آدم حتى كان الخضر هو الذي تولَّى دفنه، وأنجز اللَّه له ما وعده، فهو يحيا إلى ما شاء اللَّه أن يحيا.
