تعد رواية الكاتب الفرنسي فيكتور هوغو "البؤساء" من أشهر روايات القرن التاسع عشر، فهو يصف وينتقد فيها الظلم الاجتماعي في فرنسا بين سقوط نابليون في العام 1815 والثورة الفاشلة ضد الملك لويس فيليب في العام 1832.
تصور الرواية حياة عدد من الشخصيات الفرنسية على امتداد القرن الذي يتضمن حروب نابليون، وتعرض طبيعة الخير والشر والقانون في قصة أخاذة تظهر فيها معالم باريس: الأخلاق، الفلسفة، القانون، العدالة، الدين، وطبيعة الرومنسية والحب العائلي. لقد الهم فيكتور هوغو من شخصية المجرم/الشرطي فرنسوا فيدوك، ولكنه جعل تلك الشخصية شخصيتين في روايته.
تبقى البؤساء من روائع القصص العالمية، وذلك لشدة العاطفة الجياشة التي تحفل بها الرواية والفن الذي يتحدى أي وصف بسيط. وشخصياتها التي تستحوذ على الانتباه بشدة والتي تبقى راسخة في الذهن، مثلما تنبأ المؤلف نفسه، ومن أجل المشهد الاجتماعي والتاريخي الواسع.
