Book Description
تندرج رواية "عمال البحر" في إطار روايات هيغو الأكثر شعبيّة، وهي تتّخذ البحر مسرحاً رئيساً لها؛ فلطالما اجتذب البحر المبدعين، ودفعهم إلى التفكير والتأمل عبر أمدائه الواسعة وأسراره الكثيرة فنظروا إليه نظرةً شاملة وعميقة، وقد سار هيغو على نهجهم، لا سيّما أنه قد جاور البحر طويلاً في حياته، وفي منفاه، في غيرنيزيه.
القصة بسيطة، وحتى ساذجة، جيليات البحار الذي بدل مكان إقامته، يحيا مع أمّه التي أحاطته بعنايتها الأموميّة، بعد أن منحته الحياة؛ ولكنه يعاني حتى التلاشي من فقده إياها، ومن عزلته ووحدته، غير أنه ابن الشعب الذي بذل أقصى الجهد، ليثبت إنسانيّته ويصنع معجزة خارقة، تمثلت في إنقاذ آلة سفينة لويتيري الغارقة عند صخرة دوفر، التي أطلق عليها اسم: لادوراند.
يمجد هيغو في شخصية جيليات الإنسان الكادح والفقير الذي يُعطي بلا حساب، ويضع قدراته في خدمة قضيّة جليلة، هدفه البناء وليس التدمير والإنتقام.
ويصنع هيغو خصوصاً رواية تواجه في طروحاتها العائق الذي هو "الإعتقادات الباطلة، والأفكار المسبقة"، ويعيد الإعتبار للقيم الإنسانيّة الرفيعة، في مواجهة عبادة المال والثروة، وهيمنة الغرائز الرخيصة، والماديات الزائلة، ويرفع من شأن المسوّغات التي تجعل من الكائن البشري كائناً جديراً بالحياة.
