تهدف الدراسة إلى طرح مفهوم نظام الأمن الإقليمي في منطقة الشرق الأوسط، وفهم التحول في السياسات العربية وتأقلمها مع المستجدات الطارئة والتهديدات الأمنية التي ميزت المنطقة العربية بداية من حرب الخليج الأولى والثانية والغزو الأمريكي للعراقي في 2003 وصولاً إلى ما عرف في الأدبيات السياسية بالربيع العربي الذي ميز المنطقة وأحالها إلى خريف عربي تساقطت فيه الأنظمة وسادت الفوضى غير الخلاقة.
من الطبيعيّ أن تتأثّر المنطقة العربية، بجميع الأزمات المحيطة بالمنطقة ذات الأهمية الإستراتيجية، بدءاً بالصراع العربيّ - الإسرائيليّ، إلى الخلاف الغربيّ - الإيرانيّ حول البرنامج النوويّ لإيران، والحرب على الإرهاب والحملة الدولية للقضاء على تنظيمي القاعدة والدولة الإسلامية "داعش"، إضافة إلى تنامي الصراع الطائفيّ، والأزمات المحتملة والمتكرّرة لتصدير النفط، وتقلبات أسعاره، نتيجة حروب وأزمات المنطقة.
يهدف البحث لمعرفة التهديدات الأمنية الجديدة الداخلية والإقليمية والدولية والتحالفات والإستراتيجيات الممكنة لمواجهة خطر إنهيار دول المنطقة تباعاً وتدمير بنيات الدولة الوطنية، وكذلك آفاق الأزمات الإقليمية التي تلقي بظلالها على منطقة الشرق الأوسط ومعرفة المنظور الجديد للأمن في المنطقة.
