يشتمل هذا الكتاب على ترجمة الأصل الفرنسي لأربع مقالات علميّة كتبها دانييل جيماريه اختار أن يعالج فيها مسائل كلاميّة دقيقة لم يَكُنْ للنُّظَّارِ القدامى ولا للباحثين المحدثين رأيٌ موحَّد فيها. في المقال الأوّل تطرّق إلى أثَرٍ متميِّزٍ كتبه تلميذٌ غَيْرُ مباشِرٍ لمؤسِّسِ المدرسةِ الأشعريّة أبي الحسن الأشعري، هو أبو بكر بن فورك، حاول جيماريه فيه أن يُعِيدَ اكتشافَ الأجزاءِ الضائعة من فكر الأشعري بما يسمح بإعادة تركيب فلسفته الكلاميّة. وفي المقال الثاني ناقش جيماريه فرضيّةً أطلقها مونتغمري وات أكّد فيها المحضنَ الخارجي والإرجائي لمقالة القَدَر. فحاول جيماريه أن يُثْبِتَ صِلَتَهَا القَلِقَةَ بهذا المحضن، وانتهى إلى نَفْيِ كَوْنِهَا مقالةً واسِمَةً لِفِرْقَتَي الخوارج والمرجئة. وفي المقال الثالث المخصَّص لنظريّات الفعل البشري في المدرسة الحنبليّة، بيّن جيماريه أنّ مقالة الحنابلة في معضلة الفعل البشري لم تكن موحَّدة ولا جامدة، بل عرفت ثلاثة تعرّجات كبرى جعلت من الحنبليّة مدرسة مرنة متطوّرة. وفي المقال الرابع استعرض جيماريه أجوبة المتكلّمين القدامى عن سؤال «هل يريد الله الأفعال القبيحة؟». فبيّن ما انطوت عليه من ذكاء واجتهاد ومآزق.
