يأتي هذا الكتاب من ضمن قصص التراث الشعبي، ومن المأثور السردي العربي القديم، يقدمه الأستاذ سامر حشيمة في تحقيق رصين، هو حصيلة نوع من النظر النقدي للتراث، المستند إلى خلفية معرفية نظرية في مقاربة النص التاريخي، سواء على مستوى الحكاية أو الخطاب.
يحكي الكتاب قصة "المهلهل... الزير سالم" هذه الشخصية التراثية ستصبح محور العملية التعبيرية، للخطاب القصصي، بوصفها أنموذجاً إنسانياً للشجاعة والمروءة، وقد برزت في هذا العمل عن طريق مقدمة نثرية تسلط ضوءاً عليها ليتعرف القارئ إليها، وأهم ما في صفاتها أنها تبدو شخصية ذات نفس ثوري وتمتلك القدرة على قول الحق في وجه السلطة، كما أنها تبدو مؤشر علاقتها بالنساء، وهي السمة التي يبحث عنها الكتّاب المعاصرون في شخصياتهم المستدعاة لأنها تمنح النص بعداً جمالياً يتخطى التجربة التراثية إلى مديات أوسع تنكسر فيها حواجز الزمان والمكان، إلى عالم من التخييل من دون أن يخرج من التجربة الواقعية التراثية.
جاءت القصة إلى صيغة قال الراوي يا سادة يا كرام، ونقرأ فيها: "قال الراوي وكأن ربيعة في ذلك الزمن من جملة ملوك العربان وأخوه مرة من الامراء، والأعيان وكانت منازلهم في أطراف بلاد الشام وكانا يحكمان على قبيلتان من العرب وهما بكر وتغلب، وولد لربيعة خمسة أولاد وهم كليب الأسد الكرار وسالم البطل الشهير الملقب بالزير وعدي ودريعان وغيرهم من الشجعان، وكان له بنت جميلة الطباع شديدة الباع تعارك الأسود والسباع اسمها أسما وتلقب بضباع..." وتستمر الحكاية.
ثلاثة عناوين هي: 1-الملحمة الكبرى للتبع حسان، 2-حرب البسوس بين بكر وتغلب، 2-حرب برجيس الصليبي مع اليهود.
