تتحدّث الرواية عن فتاةٍ صغيرةٍ تُدعى سالي كانت تعيش في الهند مع والديها، ثمّ توفَيت والدتها بمرض عضالٍ، فأرسلها والدها إلى لندن لتلتحق هناك بمدرسِّةٍ داخليّةٍ للبنات، وليتابع هو عمله في الهند حيث يملك منجماً للألماس؛ ثمّ ما لبث والدها أن توفّي بعد أن خسر ثروته كلّها في إِحدى الصفقات، وترك ابنته وحيدةً تعاني الفقر واليتم والوحدة.
وسالي فتاة ذكيّة تتصدّى للصعوبات التي واجهتها بعد فقد والديها.
تعتبر رواية "الأميرة الصغيرة"، الّتي صدرت عام 1905، واحدةً من أفضل مئة كتاب للناشئة على مدار التاريخ، وهي عبارة عن نسخةٍ موسّعةٍ من رواية نشرتها الكاتبة بعنوان (سارة كرو) عام 1888، ثمّ ظهرت في كتاب عام 1887.
وقد تحوّلت الرواية إلى عرض مسرحيّ ناجح، فطلب الناشر من الكاتبة توسعة الرواية، وإضافة بعض التفاصيل والأحداث إليها، لتصدر بعد ذلك بعنوانها الحاليّ (الأميرة الصغيرة).
