تتناول هذه الرواية حياة صبيّ أميركيّ من الطبقة الوسطى (سيدريك إيرويل) يتّصف بالنباهة وكرم النفس وحسن السريرة، إذ يجد نفسه فجأةً وريثاً لجدّه في بريطانية، فيودّع أصدقاءه، ويغادر الشارع الوضيع، الّذي عاش فيه في مدينة نيويورك، بصحبة والدته ليرث ثروة جدّه الطائلة ولقبه السامي بوصفه (إِيرل) مدينة دورِنكورت.
أمّا الجدّ، فهو عجوز نزق مريضٌ بالنقرس، ولم يتعودّ أن يثق بأحد، لكنّ الصبيّ يحدث فيه تحوّلاً عميقاً يعود بالنفع على كلّ المحيطين به.
في عام 1888، اكتشفت المؤلّفة أنّ روايتها تحوّلت إلى مسرحيّة دون علمها، فرفعت أوّل دعوى قضائيّة حول حقوق الملكيّة الفكريّة وكسبتها، بعد ذلك كتبت النصّ المسرحيّ للرواية؛ كذلك نقلت الرواية إلى السينما والتلفزيون في معظم الدول الأوروبيّة والولايات المتّحدة ودول أميركا الجنوبيّة.
