اكتسبت هذه الرواية شهرتها العربية من مسلسل (انيمي) ياباني شهير انتج عام 1985، حمل بالنسخة التي دُبلجت الى العربية اسم (سالي) بيد ان السينما كانت قبل ذاك قد قدمت الرواية للمشاهد في فيلم تم انتاجه في العام 1939 حاز على شهرة اضافية لما كان عليه هذا الاثر الكلاسيكي الخالد، ثم اعيد تصويره للسينما عام 1995.
ويجدر القول ان هذه الرواية، كمجمل اعمال الكاتبة، قد لاقت استحساناً كبيراً منذ صدورها حتى الان وقد وضعت ضمن افضل مائة كتاب للاطفال في عدة تصنيفات، كما انها ترجمت الى كل اللغات الحية تقريباً.
قد تكون (اميرة صغيرة) قصو خيالية او انها قصة حقيقية بالاعتماد على طريققة تلقي القارئ لها، فهي طفلة يتيمة تتعرض لشقاء يفوق قدرة عمرها اليانغ، لكنها مغ ذلك تتعامل مع ظروفها بطريقة "رصينة" تشبه طريقة السيدات الخبيرات. ولكي تتجاوز ظروفها الشقية تضطر ان تنسج الحكايات الخيالية وتصادق الفءران في عليتها بعدما فقدت كل شيء.
ان سارا طفلة صغيرة، لكنها تتحدث كالناضجين ولها آراء عن العالم تبدو معها وكأنها خبرت الحياة لسنين طويلة هذه الطفلة تتمنى الفتيات ان تكون صديقتهن او ان يكن مثلها، كما تتمنى الامهات ان يكن بناتهن مثلها.
