القانون البحري بالتعريف هو مجموعة القواعد القانونية المتعلقة بالملاحة البحرية والتي تتحدد بمكان ممارستها لا بوسيلتها إذ هي الملاحة التي تتم في البحر، وينقسم هذا القانون إلى قانون بحري عام وقانون بحري خاص، وترجع أحكامه إلى التشريع والعرف كمصدرين رسميين لهذا القانون، ثم يأتي بعد ذلك المصادر التفسيرية وهي القضاء والفقه وهذا في ضوء القانون اللبناني والإتفاقات الدولية الخاصة بقانون الملاحة البحرية.
ولما كان القانون البحري مجموعة قواعد قانونية، فإن السفينة هي الأداة الرئيسة لهذه الملاحة البحرية، فقد أفرد المُشرع للسفينة نظاماً قانونياً خاصاً تتميز به عن غيرها من الأموال المنقولة.
لأجل ذلك تأتي هذه الدراسة في بابين: يعرض الباب الأول (السفينة) ويبحث في تعريفها وطبيعتها القانونية ثم نظامها القانوني وملكيتها والحقوق العينية التبعية عليها، أما في الباب الثاني يعرض الكتاب "أشخاص الملاحة البحرية" وعلى رأسهم مالك السفينة وكذلك الأشخاص البحريون والأشخاص البريون الذين يساهمون في تسيير السفينة وإستغلالها.
دراسة هامة تعرض لجميع جوانب القواعد القانونية المتصلة بالملاحة البحرية في لبنان وأهمها المعاهدة بروكسل التي عُنت بتوحيد قواعد المصادمات البحرية في أيلول (سبتمبر) 1910، إلى جانب معاهدات دولية أخرى تلتها يتعرض لها الكتاب بالشرح والتمحيص.
