الدين هاد للسياسة ومصححّ لمسارها، فيرسم الدين للسياسة القيم العُليا، والأهداف النبيلة، وهذا ما يمكننا أن تُسَمِّيَهُ "تديين السياسة" أي: جَعَلها خادمة للدين، مُهْتديَة به، والدين أستاذها ومعلمها، أما "تسييس الدين" فتعني به إستخدام الدين لا خدمته، وجعل الدين خادماً للسياسة، ومطيَّة إليها، أنّ يكون الدين سُلُماً يُرتقى به إلى المطامع السياسية، أن يكون الدين ألعوبة في يد اللاهثين من أهل السلطة، ويتمحور الحديث هنا على إستخدام المماليك لمكانة الحجاز الدينية في الناحية السياسية.
وكانت قافلة الحج المصري، إحدى الوسائل التي اتخذتها دولة سلاطين المماليك، لتنفيذ سياستها تجاه الحجاز، حيث كانت شؤون الحرمين الشريفين محوراً أساسياً من محاور سياسة الدولة عبر تاريخها.
ومن هنا، تأتي أهمية هذه الدراسة الموسومة بـ "إحتفالات الحج المصرية زمن سلاطين المماليك" محاولة لإبراز دور الواجهة الدينية، بصفتها أحد أهم العوامل التي ساعدت على التمكين للمماليك، ما يقارب من ثلاثة قرون، في حكم المسلمين في المناطق التي خضعت لهم، ومنافع المماليك من ذلك في النواحي السياسية والإقتصادية.
كما تهدف إلى إثبات أن الهدف الظاهري لذلك الإهتمام الكبير بمواسم الحج كان التنفيس من الناس مع تعظيم السلطان وإجلاله، فضلاً عن ترغيب الناس وحثهم على أداء فريضة الحج، أما الهدف الباطني، فربما يكون هو محاولة المماليك من وراء ذلك كسب مكانة دينية وسياسية، تسهم في دعم مركزهم السياسي، كأعظم قوة إسلامية آنذاك.
لذلك حرص المماليك على بذل غاية جهدهم في الإهتمام بتسهيل مناسك الحج للمسلمين، واهتموا بتنظيم الإحتفالات المؤثرة التي تهز المشاعر، وتحرك نوازع الرغبات الروحية الكامنة شوقاً لأداء فريضة الحج.
هذا إلى جانب هدفنا من دراسة ظاهرة الإحتفالات المصاحبة للحج آنذاك من شتى جوانبها السياسية والإقتصادية والدينية والإقتصادية، للتعرف على شخصية حكام المماليك والشعب المصري الذي يضرب بجذوره في التاريخ إلى أبعد من ذلك العصر.
